Who has real MCP, by vertical

An API is a human-built integration; MCP is agent-native access, a digital employee given a login, no interface. Maturity is wildly uneven by vertical: sales-intelligence, dev-infra and productivity are mature; payments is mature but banking-fintech and health-tech are nascent (mostly third-party FHIR bridges). We track first-party MCP (the vendor ships it) vs third-party community bridges, only first-party is a true "the company offers agent access" signal.

The old way · since ~2005

API: human integration

A developer reads the docs and builds the bridge. Every integration is bespoke, per-pair, human-written and human-maintained. The API is an interface for engineers to wire systems together.

The shift · 2024+

MCP, agent-native access

The agent discovers and uses the capability itself, at runtime, in natural language, a digital employee handed a login. No UI, no human integrator, no bridge to build. Same systems, accessed by the worker directly.

Field notes

Who ships a first-party MCP, by industry, and where agent-native access is still nascent

Adoption clusters where the work is internal, repetitive and reversible, support triage, document processing, code review, and thins sharply where an agent would touch a customer or a regulated decision. That boundary is moving, but slowly, and it moves through governance rather than capability.

Common questions
What is MCP, the Model Context Protocol?

An open standard that lets an AI agent connect to a tool or a data source without someone building a custom integration for that specific pair. The agent asks what the tool can do and then calls it (Model Context Protocol).

How is MCP different from a normal API?

An API is written for engineers: a person reads the docs and builds an integration that another person maintains. MCP is written for agents: the agent discovers the available actions at runtime and invokes them itself, with no integrator in between.

What does first-party MCP support mean?

The vendor builds and maintains the MCP server itself, so agent access is a supported part of the product. A third-party server is a community wrapper around a public API. It can work well, but it can break without warning and it says nothing about the vendor's intentions.

Which industries are adopting AI agents fastest?

Sales intelligence, developer infrastructure, payments and productivity software are furthest ahead. Banking, fintech and health tech lag, mostly because regulation and data-access rules make opening a system to an autonomous agent much harder.

Are enterprises really using AI agents, or just running pilots?

Both, and the split is predictable. Real deployments cluster where the work is internal, repetitive and reversible: support triage, document processing, code review. It thins out sharply wherever an agent would touch a customer directly or make a regulated decision.
