The tool-integration layer
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is how agents discover and use tools at runtime: an agent-native replacement for hand-built API integrations. First-party MCP servers from vendor documentation, plus moderated registries and adoption by vendor.
Methodology · why no raw ecosystem total ▾
The open registries list tens of thousands of self-published servers, so no single total is trustworthy. This list is built by scanning every software vendor in the corpus against their own documentation for a first-party MCP server, topped up from two moderated registries: the Docker MCP Catalogue and GitHub's MCP Registry. A server counts only if it lives on the vendor's own domain or verified repo. Result: 179 first-party servers from 165 vendors, each linked below to that vendor's own page.

How agents discover and use tools at runtime, first-party servers only
The registry holds 179 MCP servers, which makes it the fastest-growing layer in the corpus. A server is a small adapter: it exposes one system’s capabilities in a shape any MCP-speaking agent can call.
The growth is a distribution story more than a technical one. Writing an adapter is a day of work, and the payoff is being reachable by every agent that speaks the protocol. Expect coverage to keep widening toward the long tail of internal and niche systems, where the value of an adapter is highest and the competition lowest.
What is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?
MCP is an open standard for connecting AI agents to tools and data. A server describes what a system can do, and any MCP-speaking agent can discover and call it without a custom integration. Anthropic released it in November 2024 and the major model providers have since adopted it. (Model Context Protocol)
How does an MCP server work?
The server publishes a list of tools, each with a name, a description and a JSON schema for its inputs. The agent asks for that list, decides which tool to call, and sends the arguments back. The server runs the action and returns the result.
Is MCP secure?
The protocol does not make a tool safe by itself. A server runs with whatever access you grant it, and content it returns can carry prompt injection aimed at the agent. Run only servers you trust, scope credentials narrowly, and require approval before anything irreversible. (OWASP)
How is MCP different from a REST API?
A REST API is built for developers to read docs and write code against. MCP describes the same actions in a machine-readable way, so an agent can find and call them at runtime with no integration written first. Plugins were tied to one host app; MCP works with any compatible agent.
Where can I find MCP servers?
Start with the vendor docs for the software you already use, since most major vendors now ship a first-party server. Beyond that there are moderated catalogues from Docker and GitHub, plus the official MCP registry. Open self-publish directories list far more but verify nothing. (MCP registry)
